does router affect stability

lately my wifi is unstable and i wonder if its because of the router since its quite old. i tested the ethernet and it works fine
if its the router problem what kind of router i should get

Did you scan for other networks? Most problems i see with wifi is the 2.4Ghz being saturated by other routers in the vicinity.

Having said that a new router / AP with 5Ghz could help as its not as crowded, but more importantly it has a lower range so a neighbor cant interfere with the signal as much as 2.4Ghz will.

 

Your laptop or whatever you use will have to be able to use 5Ghz tho.
