Minecraft Server help

i am attempting to start my own server and have followed every instruction step by step. but it still wont work. ive got the whole thing up in running and i can open the game as local host, and i have done all the port fowarding stuff. please help

A little more info is helpful, what operating system are you using, what instructions are you following?

You can't connect to your external ip from the same computer.

That's why you can log in with localhost.

Only your friends will be able to use the external IP.

When you set the static IP in windows did you make sure it was on the same subnet as the rest of the network? Can you connect from another computer on the same network?

Did you make sure the server is actually running? Also what ip did you fill in in your client?

i put my ipv4 address and yes the bat file was running when i did this

If you want to test the external ipv4 address you have to access the server from outside your network, for example using 4G or school/friends wifi.
