I have to choose between surface pro 6 and surface book 2. I don't mind if I have a 12 inch screen. But I'm worried about the performance of surface pro 6. "Quad core i7 and 8gb of ram" is it going to be good enough for doing everyday stuff and doing a little video and photo editing or do I need a graphic card?

Depends on what and how you edit... which tools, longer videos etc...

For the accessability of usb ports etc and gfx power I would hint to the Surface Book 2 15" version with its own discret gfx. It's not as powerfull as a highend gaming notebook, but still a beast... and you are still able to detach the screen and se it as tablet with the Intel integrated GFX, due to the GF is in the lower section.

but this is my own preference then ^^

The Surface Pro might be enough for your needs, but to give further advise a little more infromation is needed.

Cheers

Davinci uses nvidia CUDA for effects, or if you have the NVENC Codec pack.

If those are short videos, well the integrated gfx may be enough, but keep in mind, upgrading to a discret gpu afterwards is not possible.

For a investment of this size, try to make it last at least 3-5 years performance wise.

Personally I would go the Book2 15" road with GF graphics... So even later I can switch to NVENC encoding. As for RAM, try to go for 16 GB. ( may be good for starters but in the long run you will be glad you packed 16 gb )

Encoding videos with NVENC I know from Handbrake when I encode my series DVDs to H265. My I5 3570K is a snooze fest... while when using the NVENC codec it is a breeze even with my slow GF 1060 6gb.

Speed example:

Lucifer Season 2 Episode 1 converted to H265 with NVENC encoding a 43 minutes video in around a minute... using cpu encoding only it takes around 30-35 Minutes.
