So for over a month ive been using my old laptop to tether my wireless connection to my PC as my router is in hallway next to exit doors of house and my pc is in my room across kitchen and living room so i cant run a cable thru half the house :/ One day i reinstalled windows on the laptop and went to set everything up and i got Unidentified network and i couldnt share my internet connection via the ICS thing. I tried the troubleshooter in windows, unplug and plug back in, restarting even reformatting both pc and laptop but to no avail... any ideas on what i can do besides getting a proper wifi card/adapter(im planning to do that soon)

I have used the default windows drivers and the network card in my laptop is detected fine. What i would do is run a windows 8.1 to go version cause i took out the hdd outta my laptop for pc cause i needed more space and laptop is just trash and it worked fine thru few reinstalls before but now it doesnt seem to want to do that

not so daily bump, but seriously i still need help with this, i cant even transfer files or anything

I think there is something in the Firewall settings that lets you set you network to Public or Private. I cant tell you where as Windows 10 pissed me off so I started using Linux instead.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

So when you say tether your wireless connection to your PC. Do you mean via a WIFI router? So you are saying your what... hooking your pc to the laptop via a ethernet cable and sharing the connection that way? Why not invest in either a cheap wireless card for your PC or get a wifi range extender with a LAN port to plug in to.

You aren't being clear enough with your intent and setup. I need to know how you are getting internet on both devices. I mean you could just be having an issue with your wireless router and a restart could fix it. It could be signal strenth... have you tried moving the laptop closer to the router to get the connection established. I just think we need more to go on before we can really troubleshoot the cause.

You can get one either from walmart on amazon for like 10-15 bucks FYI. Which would be a much better solution in the end. For about 25 you could get a tenda wifi range extender with a LAN port that would also work if you wanted to increase your wifi range potentially.

I think it is going to be the best option going forward. They are inexpensive and you can use it still if you upgrade. It just takes the laptop out of the equation which you said doesn't have an internal storage drive anyways.

Its also likely to be more reliable, as ICS will block certain kinds of traffic and also causes a double-NAT which is potentially an issue if gaming.
