Remote desktop file management

Hi guys

I'm curious to know if I can send files from my phone to my PC (or PC to phone) when I'm not at home.

Let's say I'm in school and I really need something from my PC, can i just access it remotely? Or if my phone is full and I want to dump some pictures from my phone onto my PC, can I do that remotely?

It would be really handy but I have no idea how or if any of that works.

Thanks for your help :)

That'd be more of a NAS usecase, you probably can't do that with a regular PC.

perhaps backup your entire PC, or all the files that you might need onto the cloud/nas.

Easiest way is with something like logmein/teamviewer

You can do something like rdp with copy and paste, or ftp, but you should really do those over a vpn.

I'm very much a networking noob

What do rdp and ftp mean? And how does teamviewer work?

rdp and ftp are protocols for remote desktop and sending files respectively.

What can't you find a solution for? Can you connect to you desktop? It should let you copy files.

If you already have a Windows PC, you could just use the built-in OneDrive. Instructions from Microsoft, Use OneDrive to fetch files on a PC. As for stuff from your phone, you would technically be dumping it onto the OneDrive Online Storage, which you can then sync to your PC.

Keep in mind no matter what solution you choose, you're going to have to make sure your PC doesn't hibernate/sleep (or the make sure the program you use can wake it up) or you won't be able to connect.

CPU: Vulnerable to Meltdown | Motherboard: Has LEDs that I can't see | RAM: Bought too much | GPU: Mostly satisfactory so far in our relationship | Case: Shiny, black, very heavy and tall, with a Firefox sticker | Storage: Has too many old HDDs | PSU: Hasn't blown up yet like it's predecessor | Displays: Mismatched from Craigslist | Cooling: As many Noctuas as there are fan headers | Keyboard: Keys are fading |  Mouse: Needs cleaning |

then try logmein or one of the many other file transfer programs.

But if you want a simple way to send files, id just store everything on the cloud, much simpler.
