Replacement PSU

shadow_FIX

hi guys, sorry i'm sure there's like the exact thread posted somewhere but i don't really browse here much, hence why i didn't spend a bunch of time looking.

basically, i have no idea what power supply to replace my current one with. LTT seems to push Seasonic quite hard, but i know there are other good options.

i used Seasonic's wattage calculator and it recommended i need a 750w power supply. my current one is a no-named generic i had ibuypower put in my computer when i didn't know what i was doing, and after upgrading to the RX 580 it makes funky sounds when under load.

here are my questions:

- with modular PSU's, do they come with the cables i will need or do i have to order them separate?

- would a non-modular / semi-modular have everything i need assuming i'm not a stickler about cable management? (build below)

- is Seasonic the brand to beat, or are there others some of you might recommend?

thanks, i'm just nervous about change :)

build:

3770k

16gb DDR3 RAM

Radeon RX 580

soundcard / SATA SSD / SATA HDD / optical drive (what even are those anymore)

unfortunately PSU calculators are rather unreliable

this rig draws less than 400 watts. In my signature I put my power draw as a point of reference, and you can click my power supply for a link to the PSU tier list.

all cables will be included

yep, the only advantage modular PSUs have is the removable cables, nothing else.

It's not about brand, it's about quality. I also have some topics linked in my signature at the bottom about some Seasonic power supplies that have issues.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

You can find which cables are included on the product website.

Depends on the case.

Seasonic has few interesting options. I wouldn't recommend any brand, I would recommend specific PSUs. Which PSUs, depends on where you're buying from and what you're powering.

All the necessary cables, in all fully modular, semi-modular, and non-modular scenarios, are included.

These days, the cables are usually all black, or "mustard and ketchup" wrapped in a mesh outer jacket.

Of course, you can always order a set of custom cables, like the ones CableMods offer.

https://cablemod.com/product-category/full-cable-kits/

Cables are usually PSU brand / model specific, so determine WHICH PSU you want before buying the custom cables.

For your system, even a quality 500W ~ 550W will give you 100W+ of extra headroom.

650W ~ 750W would even accommodate for a second RX-580.

i think i will likely end up going with the Corsair RM650. Tier A on the PSU list, and while it's overkill for my current system, it carries a 10yr warranty and since my tower was built in 2012, there's a strong possibility this PSU could go into my next computer.

thanks for making an otherwise confusing decision in a crowded market much, much easier. :)
