Should buy a new desktop

I have a core i5 2500k CPU and my dad thinks I should buy a new computer with a better processor that is under 300 dollars. I have 10Gb DDR3, Asus P8H67M-Pro, Radeon Rx 570 4Gb, and a Corsair CX550. What should I do?

In essence, you have a card and power supply. Can you use the old storage and case?

That would allow you to get a 1600, B450 board and 8GB DDR4

The difference between a  2500k and 2200g isn't that much so maybe not the best upgrade?

I'd get a Ryzen 5 1600, B450 board and 8GB of DDR4.

Do you have an SSD for a boot, programs and maybe games drive? If you don't, add in an SSD. A 1200 or 2200G isn't an upgrade over the 2500K, so keep the 1600. If you can find a cheap 1400 or 1500X and overclock it, that's going to be great too.

Do you have an SSD for a boot, programs and maybe games drive? If you don't, add in an SSD (and downgrade the CPU to a 2200G or 1200 if needed).

Why would you get a worse CPU to fit in an SSD? It's much cheaper to add an SSD later on.

budget? well...

Since there is such a constraint maybe op should just wait till he has saved up more. Then money won't be wasted on a mediocre upgrade.

An R5 1600 isn't mediocre, unless you're pushing high refresh rates. I had one, even at stock it kept up with a 1080 just fine. A 2200G would be a mediocre upgrade, the R5 1600 would be quite noticeable in most titles.

still didn't answer why on earth you'd reccomend a worse CPU to fit in an SSD

Honestly for $300 I would wait. not a huge amount of upgrading over a 2500k for gaming for $300 canadian. I would save a while to get a more performance per $ upgrade ($141 more apparently) especially if this rig is going to need to last as long as your 2600k did. I recommend  getting a Ryzen 5 2600 it will be a significant upgrade and likely last much longer than what you can pull off at $300.

if you can swing it a ryzen 7 2800x would be even better but that is even more $

I did use pc parts picker in Canadian dollars. the advise is to save up the difference there in Canadian dollars for a worthwhile upgrade rather than a small one.

in US dollars that system is $323
