Upgrading laptop's RAM (from 8 to 12)

Go to solution Solved by TrigrH,

My Dell Inspiron comes with 8 GB DDR4 @ 2400MHz in single channel. So I was planning to add another 4GB to enable dualchannel and to have a little bit more of room when I work in Solidworks/Inventor doing 3D modeling. Would it be ok to go with 4 GB? I want to upgrade just the necesary for the less amount of money, since I'm also planning to upgrade from this TN panel (which is pretty bad) to an IPS.

Full specs, just in case:

i5 7300HQ

GTX 1050 4GB

8 GB DDR4

256 NVME SSD

1TB HDD

It would work, however you have to make sure you match the memory die. So for example you buy a crucial kit of 4gb but its micron chips, and I know for a fact dell uses samsung OEM. it wouldnt work perfectly, Try and find Samsung die memory. at my local computer store samsung was the cheapest thing there and they were the brand being sold.

CPU: Intel Core i9 9900K | Ram: 16GB Corsair LPX 3000 DDR4 | Asus Maximus XI Hero Z390 | GPU: EVGA RTX2080 XC | 960 EVO Samsung 500GB M.2 | 850 EVO Samsung 250GB M.2 | Samsung 1TB QVO SSD | 1TB HDD WD Blue

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 9370 | I7 1065G7 | 32GB DDR4 | 1TB SSD |

1. 7300hq is an i5.

2. I really doubt the hassle risking 4gb instead of getting the same 8gb stick is worth it.

1. Yea, you're right. It was a typo. Corrected!

2. So, is there a potential compatibility issue if I go with 4? I'm curious

Yep, some motherboards may not boot in that configuration, since the memory will not be the same. Whilst two idendical sticks of memory will almost always work.

What do you mean by perfectly?
This guy uses Crucial in this video and the computer seems to have no issue reconizing the 16 GB

I'm broke and Dell charges $59 for the memory, which is a little bit too much.

You dont need to buy it from dell, open your laptop and take a photo of the memory module thats in there.
