Do GPU braces work?

Getting a new 2080 and wondering if its worth adding a GPU brace:

I've never had to use a gpu brace, sure the cards can sag a bit but generally it works just fine long as you don't move the case (often).

And thus i cannot spreak from experience so i will stick to theory.

 

The reason a card sags is because it does not have enough strength / support caused by a weight to length ratio.

Using the brackets you suggested would suffer from exactly the same. Sure you will brace the card as you add some rigidity, but essentially your gpu technically has more support than the brace itsself. (comming from the pcie slot on the other end)

 

If you are wanting to brace your gpu i would look for a sollution like @191x7 suggested, where you would use the vertical strength to brace your gpu, as your gpu is experiencing the weight load in that same direction. I do however not recommend getting any type of support that is conductive of nature (nothing steel or copper, let alone any wire types) to prevent shifting and causing shorts.

I use the one that came with my MSI RTX Duke card... but before that I usually just added a wooden dowell painted black cut to the correct length from the shroud to the bottom of the case. painted black to match the interior of the case it does not really look out of place and its not even easy to see through the tinted glass unless you really try. and turn the case lighting all the way up. 

 

I do woodworking too so I just have it laying around, but a 4 ft length .75 inch diameter of poplar dowel is like $3-4 ($3.18 currently at lowe's in my area), though you could use thinner ones for sure .75 just will never let it sag as it is pretty big. black paint if you don't have it another $.79 for a tube of craft paint or if you also airbrush or have rattlecans around it again uses things you may have (heck sharpie would probably work). The most expensive part will be a saw for the dowel if you do not have one but that is only a few bucks too ($5-8) but a hardware store will probably cut it for you if you have the measurement you need.

I use this (Cooler Master's version) and like it a lot.  It's nearly invisible with the tempered glass side panel on in my R6.

that's a very good idea, and people complaining about GPU sag hasn't deterred gpu manufacturers from making oversized non-reference coolers.
