Hi Guys

My friend asked me to backup his old hdd for him, and it gas windows XP on it so I thought I'd use it on my X58 system

It works, but it automatically boots. It asks me to sign in, so I do. (there's only one user registered). When I sign in, it tells me I have to activate Windows. I can't do anything else. I get the activation window with 3 options:

Turn off system

Activate via internet

Activate via phone

I tried the phone method and it doesn't work.

I tried the internet method and it can't establish a connection. I'm using a wifi adapter but even so I don't get any option to connect to wifi.

I thought it would be a good idea to start in safe mode, but I can't get into safe mode.

It says I need to use a proxy server but I have no idea how

Please help me

What should I do?

I just want to play some old games :/

To my knowledge the Windows activation servers for XP have mostly if not all been shutdown. XP (outside of maybe military use) is pretty much considered EOL (End of Life). Support for most versions have all but ended. I think there's very few versions if any left still being actively updated by Microsoft.

If you have a product key you can re-install XP and give it the key. This will get you to the desktop reliably. I really wouldn't recommend trying to get it online if it's avoidable. Install things using a USB if you just want it for games.

The activation servers for windows XP have been shut down, so the internet option isn't gonna work...

the phone option should work, although sometimes when you change a lot of hardware parts, windows XP just "forgets" that you have ever inserted an activation key, and the code that you dial in to the phone service is based on that key, so what it currently gives you is a generic code that does not exist.

your best bet is to try to enter a different valid key if possible and then try the phone service once again.
you might also try to enter oobe (out of box experience) mode, although i'm not sure if you can do that without having access to windows explorer. you might be able to use it through a windows PE disc.

W10? You don't have an OS on that system?

Win10 works for any system with 4gb or more RAM.

If you want to activate using the internet you'll have to do this:

Open control panel --> internet options --> advanced --> uncheck "check for server certificate revokation" and "check if the publisher revoked a certificate". You may have only one such option. Try activating via the internet again, if you're successful, go back to the internet options and check those options again.

I plug the SSD in

I get the splash screen, it goes to verifying DMI pool data, then it says insert system disk and press enter

I already tried changing the order in the boot menu ( I had to go and borrow my friend's PS/2 keyboard or it wouldn't even work) and it still didn't work

Bit beyong my knowledfe, but I think its about bootmgr and partition systems. If you have option for it, try using legacy+uefi for booting from drive.
