X299 apex

I have an x299 apex and ran 2 nvme drives in the first dimm.2 closest to the rear I/O and recently I decided to have a cheeky upgrade and get 2 more 500gb nvme's to put in the second dimm.2 slot but for the love of God couldnt get it working I know the drives work as tried on a separate system but was just wondering cause this dimm.2 slot is wired into the PCH does that mean I can only use regular data m.2.
