Want to edit a .DAT file

I want to edit a "stats.DAT" file, however, when I open the file with notepad, does it only show this (see picture)

Does anybody have any idea what I can do to properly edit the file?

The file is from Stronghold Legends. It's the user profile stats data file. 

Edit: I have tried to look it up, but I only get "use notepad" solutions.

we need context, what is this dat file for, which app created it?

a dat file can be a type of compressed file, can be a audio file, can be a video file

 

you try to open it like it was a text file, but it is not

 

the file is part of a game?

Forgot to add that.  It is the stats file for the user profile for the game Stronghold Legends.

it probably can be edited but with a hex editor or with a dedicated savegame editor, the file is not just text, cant be done directly

.DAT is used as a generic file extension for any sort of data. Look and see if anyone's ever modified the save data for the game and how, if successful, they did it.
