CPU Upgrade

it's an msi b250. Sorta run of the mill. Is that decent enough?

that motherboard is decent and should support a i5 or a i7 non k versions

best it can support taking in consideration the lack of overclockability is a i7 7700 or buy the k version but just because it runs 600 mhz faster than the non k version

it is around 300 dollars on amazon, perhaps on ebay you could find it cheaper

if you consider moving to a newer intel, a i5 9400 could be a good option at 200, is cheaper than the i7 but you will need new motherboard, so the cost goes up to the same of the i7

if you move to amd, perhaps a r5 2600 and a decent b450 motherboard and you would be under the price of the i5 and with some extra money to spend on more ram

these 3 ideas assume you will reuse the rest of the build, including ram

So, I currently run a pentium g4600. Obviously, it's not very good for anything these days, and so i've been looking to upgrade. Now, what would be the most cost effective and convenient upgrade? Upgrading to a better Kaby Lake Chip like the 7600k or the 7700k, or changing to a new generation of chip like the 9600k or ryzen 5 3600?

The most cost effective would be to upgrade to a newer generation so u can always upgrade again if need be in the future.

I would recommend the AMD Ryzen.

What GPU do you have? There’s no point getting a better CPU if you’re running something like the 1050.

Ya, but there is no point in upgrading the GPU if he has a craptastic cpu either lol. You have to start somewhere, might as well be with a decent cpu and motherboard. Then add a card later when you save up the money for it.

I would get the Ryzen 5 3600 on a B450 motherboard. I only purchased a 2600x because you need an older CPU to update the bios to be ryzen 3000 ready, and I didn't want to spend extra money on something I would never use again.

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x  | GPU: GTX 1070 FE | RAM: TridentZ 16GB 3200MHz | Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus M | PSU: EVGA 650 B3 | STORAGE: Boot drive: Crucial MX500 1TB, Secondary drive: WD Blue 1TB hdd | CASE: Phanteks P350x | OS: Windows 10 | Monitor: Main: ASUS VP249QGR 144Hz, Secondary: Dell E2014h 1600x900

I've had oddly good luck with this - buy an HP /Dell workstation off ebay with a i7 or i5. Then swap CPUs, and resell the workstation back on eBay or craigslist. (don't be dishonest, list it with the G4900)

Usually I'd lose 100 bucks, and get a much better CPU in the process. I've done this countless times.

I have a gtx 1050 ti. But i'm going to upgrade both my cpu and gpu at the same time. Probably will be getting an RTX 2060 or the rx 5700.

in terms of cost, what determines the cheapest upgrade is your motherboard, if is decent and you can buy a i5 at least that would be great

if your budget allows more, of course that ryzen is the way to go

it's an msi b250. Sorta run of the mill. Is that decent enough?

Try looking in the amd market, the used market has popped up with alot of 2600's lately( I'm from the AU so I don't know what its like for the rest of the world). The 2600 is a good CPU and getting something like a 1070ti or 1080 will last you quite a while. even the fx cpus are cheaper again. I say a fx 9370 go for $120 with a asrock 990x with it.

Get a 3600 and B450 with a RX 5700 or 2060. Go look at benchmarks for the games you play and see which is faster.
