Pick one with bios flashback if you don't have an am4 cpu or  the store you buy from doesn't offer a "flash latest bios" option or you have no friends with am4 cpus.

pick one with 2+ green checkmarks n vrm section (2 means good enough for up to 8 core incl. overclocking, 3 means 12 core, 4 means 16 core ... orange means it works but a bit extra cooling on vrm area recommended)

Hi there, I am looking to get a ryzen 3rd gen, but I do not want to spend the amount of money that the new motherboards with the PCI-E 4 that support ryzen 3rd gen cost. I am looking for an B450 motherboard that works well with Ryzen 3rd gen and has no problems. I may be able to use someones elses Ryzen 1st gen to update the bios, but preferrably, I would like the 3rd gen to work right out of the box, so I can do the Bios update with that.

Thanks ?

MSI b450 pro carbon ac is the king of B450s...and with the latest bios update, I have confidence recommending it

I have 2 new Ryzen systems in my house (a 3600x and a 3700x) both on MSI B450 Pro Carbon AC's and Bios version 18 has resolved all issues. Both systems are running like champs. But the journey started out shaky. It took 2 bios flashbacks for the initial beta bios to install and then it had issues booting up easily

Bios ver 17 was compatible with ryzen 3000, but it had issues booting up. It required me to click the power button and then the pwr reset button before it would boot, sometimes, requiring clicking the pwr reset button more than once to boot. Once booted, it was rock solid. This was consistent on both computers.

Bios ver 18 has now resolved this. It starts up with one power button click every single time now. So I'm confident recommending the B450 Pro Carbon AC based on my personal experience

I'm not sure about the status of the b450 Tomahawk though. I'm not sure if all issues have been ironed out on that motherboard.
