I have a GTX 980 Nvidia reference card, and the temperatures seem a bit high. While running cuda workloads the temperatures easily get up to 80c and start peaking at 90-92c.
I did repaste the card, that didnt help, there is little to no dust so that doesnt really matter.
Is the reference cooler just this bad? If so, should I try buying a 980 Ti cooler for $15? Or do you have other suggestions? I may be able to use a 980 Ti Amp! cooler on it.

Have you tried to remove dust from the cooler?

Also as long as you don't go below base clocks the temps are fine.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

yes.

it started to thermal throttle.

To keep it at a more "reasonable" temperature I had to run 987mhz on the core.

Ok. The reference cooler shouldn't be THIS bad, but I don't know what's causing it to perform so poorly...

So are you using a fan profile? What speed is the fan getting to?

The temps didn’t change at all after the repaste, even idle temps?

Only really pay attention to max, this was running for over 9 hours.

the 80c was 100% fan speed, and when it got there, I was playing with msi afterburner and set a max temp of 70c as the priority.

The voltage seems a little high. The clock speed was always in the 950-980mhz area.

Well need an idea of real time specs. Max won’t help if we can’t see how it got there.

I'm now really confused, it was hitting 92c last night, but now the max is 79-80c unless I raise the power limit...
Just wondering, would it be a good idea to mount a fan on the outside of the pc over the pcie bracket thing for more airflow back there?

More aggressive fan curve is keeping it at 80c after 6 minutes this is a picture after 5. (The benchmark started 5 minutes 10 seconds ago, so 47c is not the idle)

Take cooler off clean all dust repaste and add a really agresive fan curve

Don't buy the amp cooler the pcb is different layout

U should easy be able to hit 1500mhz on that card with abrasive curve, clean out and repaste

I did that. It's still hot as fuck.

The 980 Ti Amp! Omega uses a reference 980/Ti PCB
Plus, I have the card here already, its a friends card and I can test if the cooler fits fine. If it does I can have it for $15 (The cooler is $15, the card is dead)
