Hi everyone,

I am planning to upgrade my system.

I noticed, that I reach almost 95% CPU utilization at almost every game.

Therefore I want to upgrade my system, which is currently:

  • CPU: Intel i7-6700k (OC'd to 4.4GHz)
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2
  • Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX schwarz DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-2400, CL16-16-16-39 (CMK16GX4M2A2400C16)
  • GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Xtreme 8G, 8192 MB GDDR6
  • PSU: Corsair RM650i

I use my PC for gaming, streaming (using NVENC) and a bit of video editing.

What would you recommend?

My budget is around 1000€ (The less, the better ;) )

I thought about the new Ryzen CPUs. But I don't know if I should choos a Ryzen 5 3600x or Ryzen 7 3700x or Ryzen 7 3800x.

Gaming, streaming and editing? Sounds a workstation which i prefer Ryzen 3rd gen. its cut half of price to its competitor ( INTEL ) and offer twice thread. ryzen 7 3700x i believed. and for the mobo go with x570 i guess

Personally, I'd say wait for Zen2+ or 10th gen but if you want to waste some money, a 3700X is the best value imo.

10th gen Intel is believed to be another Coffee Lake refresh as Intel isn't moving to 10nm chips until next year unless I'm mistaken. So 10th gen isn't really feasible imo.

OP can still go for a 3700X or even save money and go for a 3600 (although I feel like a 3700X or 3900X meets the OPs needs better), pick up an X470/B450/X570 board, stay under 1000 and still be viable for an upgrade to Zen2+/Ryzen 4000 if the OP feels like it. My point is I'd go for a 3700X, get a nice X470 or X570 board  and enjoy your system and if next gen for Ryzen proves to be another big step forward you can consider them again if you wish. Whilst with Intel you always risk investing into a platform with no future pathway and you often pay a lot more for it.

When you say you are hitting 95% on the cpu in every game, is that while gaming, or gaming AND streaming? And do you think your cpu is making you hit some kind of limit that is holding you back and causing problems? Technically it is doing what it is supposed to do, it is using the resources avialable to it. If it were hitting 100 percent and you were having issues while playing the game then I would worry.

I would also consider what settings you are playing at. It is possible if you increased them it would become more gpu bound and free up more of your cpu. It is possible you could tweak a few things and not have to spend any money at all.

Now if you just want a change there is nothing wrong with that either. I didn't NEED to build my new system, I just wanted to. I think a 3700x would work well. And you don't need a x570 board. I mean you can get one if you want to spend the extra money, but a good b450 will work to. You will just have to flash the bios before you can use the new cpu, so make sure it is a board that has the bios flashback option where you don't need a cpu to flash the bios. If you get the x570 this isn't an issue, it will work right out of the box.

Don't get the 3800x, its a waste of money. It really doesn't do anything the 3700x won't. If you want more performance spend the extra money and get the 3900x. And the 3600 is an incredible bargain for the money, but it has less cores.

Thank you all for your recommendations!

I think I will switch to a Ryzen 7 3700x with an x570 board (maybe PCIe 4 could be an interesting feature in the future)

No worries.

If you need help deciding on an X570 (or B450/X470 if you decide to go for a more budget option) board just let us know. :)
