Hi

I'm building a new computer and I was planning on buying a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 GB m.2 ssd as boot drive. I'd also want some extra redundant storage in my system so I was thinking about 2x Intel 660p 512GB M.2 SSD in RAID 1(mirrored) for the speed, but how safe would that be, if the motherboard fucked up somehow? Other solution could be 2x 2.5 SSD's, also in RAID 1, but worse speed. The Intel M.2 ssd is the same price as 2.5 ssd from WD.

Also, could 3x M.2 SSDs on the same motherboard ruin the speed of the bootdrive? MSI MEG Z390 ACE

Other solutions is also welcome.

Why would you raid the 660p's? They are already plenty fast at 1.8GB/s.

Also the 660p is only fast if you write small files on it. Here is the amount of data you can write to the drive at a time, as you can see as the drive starts to fill up the size drops drastically on the 512gb version.

Image result for 660p speed graph

Why is this important? IF the SLC cache fills up, the write speed drops to 80-120MB/s, so a bit slower than a HDD.

So only consider the 660p or any other QLC ssd only if you write a small amount of data to it at a time.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Hey,

970Evo Plus is prefect for the boot drive!

But DONT use Mobo raid for the sake of data security. Get one drive on the Mobo and one external for you to store on a different location. When doing backups constantly this will be saver.

Also RADI 1 won't improve your speed. RAID 0 does, but when losing one drive you're fed

And if where tasing about data security and longevity, still properly stored and mentioned HDDs are better (and cheaper)

Yeah I know RAID 1 won't improve speed, but then I get two copies of the data. I've used two 1 TB WD Black drives in software raid before, but it's so slow it's painfull when copying files.

Depending on the Raid controller/software it can also be slow. Sure SSDS will be faster but not as reliable compared to HDDs. Personal taste :D

But doooont do it with Mobo raid for acival purposes

Alright, how would you manage 500-1000 GB of safe storage?

Depends

Best strategy is

1. Local backup (external RAID box or something along those lines. BUT not mobo raid.)

2. Remote backup (cloud service or something) I recommend: https://www.backblaze.com 6$/month and you have a SOLID cloud backup, also with file version history.

For many peeps just using back blaze or something like it will be sufficient

Man, these are all so complicated sounding. I’d get one 250-500GB boot drive and one 2TB secondary or two 1TB 2.5” SATA SSDs in RAID 1 if you’re worried about redundancy and depending on your storage needs. Then have an external 2TB+ usb drive for backup.
