What do you think of this build?

I'm planning to build a new rig but I don't know much around AMD's platform so would like your input. I think the Ryzen 5 3600 is good enough or probably more for my needs.

My use cases and things I considered:

  1. I do mostly programming web & hybrid mobile apps and I use Docker often
  2. Gaming but not heavy (heaviest I've played so far is probably Nier: Automata)
  3. A bit of music production
  4. I'll move the GTX 1660 Ti and 4TB WD Black on my current rig to this new one so don't mind the costs
  5. I didn't go for the X570 as I don't think I have any use for all those extra features
  6. I'd like a micro-ATX build
  7. I do not plan to overclock and probably never will.

I'm assuming you have the drives already? If not, these are some cheaper options.

The SSDs, no. I'll check out those you suggested if they're available in my area.

Have a few questions though:

  1. Is the MSI Gaming Plus better than the Mortar?
  2. From what I've gathered, higher clock speeds is better on Ryzen. Will there be a huge performance setback if I went 3000Mhz? Thought the CL 16 3200MHz is a good balance. Checked on where I'm planning to buy and the difference is $19.64. I'm willing to pay that difference since I'm expecting this rig to serve me for 4-5 years. Unless the performance is negligible then I'll go for that.
  3. As for the PSU, do I really need a 750W? xD

The difference is tiny, afaik.

It was cheaper than the 550 and 650 versions and it's better than the Focus. Multi rail, too, so there isn't any protections issues.

I also have a 3200MHz 16GB (2x8) RAM kit. Practically, you won't even notice the difference between 300MHz & 3200MHz (considering that they have the same or close timings.) As for the PSU, what's the wattage on your PCPARTPICKER list?

It won't remotely touch 300W. It's just a better PSU for less.

Haha, I see. Thanks for the input. My options are really limited for mATX and all I've been seeing are bad VRMs for overclocking xD What I'd like to know is what if I DON'T overclock, how are the temps and so on. Oh well. As for the PSU, not really sure for this one. I just practically want a Gold Rated PSU xD

Silver and Gold efficiency aren't too far off. It's a nice PSU, great electrical performance, better than the Gold rated Focus+.

I'd say both would be more than sufficient in that case. I'd personally recommend going for the 650 Focus Gold rather than the 750 Corsair Vengeance, though. Higher tier, higher quality, higher efficiency. Refer to Lienus' PSU tier list to learn more about that.

Nonsense. The Focus Gold has safety protections issues on units made before 01/2018, while units made after have high ripple rates.

The electrical performance is also barely worth it to go with the Focus.

Efficiency is negligible. They're all high efficiency.

I've been bickering to get the Focus down a tier for the last little while. It'll probably be bumped soon.

You don't have to explicitly state that you made the tier list. I know it as I mentioned at the end. I made my judgement only based on your tier list, which says the same thing I do. That's why I told him to check the tier list himself as well. You're right : Arguably, efficiency is negligible between Silver & Gold, but Gold is still better at the end.

Well if you are not gaming i actually recommend the Ryzen 7 2700 or the 1700, would help out the compile times in either case.

If music producing, I say the 2700 is actually a better deal plus it does have some gaming capacity on the side

I've been talking about the PSU and RAM and forgot about the build itself.

I'd recommend the Crucial MX500 2.5" SSD over the Samsung 860 EVO. Compare them on userbenchmark & see for yourself. (NOTE: Currently, this site is only good for comparing storage devices. Never use it as a reliable source of data for other components in its current state) You'll save yourself a few bucks for a tiny compromise in performance (if any)

Been considering the MX500, should I get whichever is cheaper?

I made my judgement only based on your tier list, which says the same thing I do.

And now it doesn't!

The initial Tier B rating was for the old Vengeance unit.

The new one is now in Tier A!

How about Corsair TX650M or EVGA Supernova 650 G1+?

Get the former, not the latter. 550W is way more than enough.

I'd still get the Vengeance to save a buck though.

MX500, 660p, P1, Ultra 3D, EX900/920/950, get whatever is cheapest.

Did you just edit the tier list to win the argument? ?

Yes, and no.

The tier list was last updated before that unit had reviews. There are now reviews. As such, up it goes.

Well if you are not gaming i actually recommend the Ryzen 7 2700 or the 1700, would help out the compile times in either case.

If music producing, I say the 2700 is actually a better deal plus it does have some gaming capacity on the side

I think I'd go for the higher IPC despite having just 6 cores.

I'll ask, fully modular and also in Tier A of LienusLateTips' PSU Tier List. What do you think between TX550M and RM550X @LienusLateTips?

I've had a Deepcool and Seasonic M12II 520w PSUs failed on me in under a year and since then, I've thought my next build should better have a proper PSU lol. My current VS450 is a quick replacement since I needed work done asap back then.

RMx is tier a+, tx is tier a.

Rmx is a better unit than the tx afaik.
