Gaming on a Linux...

What are your thoughts and opinions about the "new era of gaming"? Linux OS is noticeably popular these days and the fact that Linus tech tips made videos about gaming on a linux gave pretty good impressions about the future of the system.

Personally, the configuration of the system and picking a specific "distro" (think, android launcher) plus the typing of specific commands is really scary when you mess up. But after watching Anthony's explanation about using Linux gave me at least a ray of hope on leaning to the system. If you know what command to input, it wouldn't be a hassle. Seeing the development so far is really astonishing. And so after a long debate with myself, I would love to see the operating system grow with popularity and soon, one day, help in the development of it. With companies backing up the system, I doubt that it wouldn't be known by every tech enthusiast and maybe the mainstream public about the interesting system..

For games specifically there is absolutely no reason to use Linux if you can afford a Windows license. Linux is not and will never be (thankfully) Windows but free.

 

However, if you already want to use Linux for other reasons, these developments allow you to switch with fewer caveats.

You can do this right now. Even if you know nothing about programming you can still contribute by translating documentation or testing it on different hardware.

Can't. I have yet to buy a new system as I am stuck with an Old laptop for casual workload. (Laptop specs on my profile. It's petty :<()

It's still useful input. And obviously you can do translations on a potato no problem (assuming you know another language).

By installing Lubuntu and Midori you can breath new life into old hardware.

There are some nice games on Steam that would probably run on your machine:

  • Baldur's Gate series
  • Oxygen Not Included
  • Rimworld
  • Left for Dead
  • Borderlands


Make sure to double check the requirements on the store page before getting any of them.

As for myself, I went over to Linux 4 years ago, I have a 5820 @ 4.1GHz, 64 GB of RAM at 2666, M.2 NVME, SSD cache, SSHD RAID, Vega 64
I could easily have fit Windows into that budget but at even $1 I would feel I was paying too much for that bloated mess.

Microsoft has bought a platinum seat at the Linux foundation, GIThub and are incorporating Linux more and more into their products. Even they know Windows is terrible. I think either way in the next 5-10 years people will be using Linux just with a Windows skin.

with most distro's (ubuntu, manjaro) you never have to use the commandline if you don't want to. only when you are doing very advanced things it's possible you might have to use it. most linux users prefer commandline just because it's faster. you don't have to use it, it's a choice.

I'm already using Linux since about two decades and that includes gaming. Sure, I wasn't playing shiny new games, but for me gaming isn't about graphics anyway. I've got a $40 GPU. Radeon something. More than enough for my use case. I've got more good games than I've got time playing and everything's cheap. Win-win.

Gaming is more or less a solved issue under Linux. What isn't, are the 1:1 analogues to the major applications in the windows world.

And there's no reason you wouldn't be able to anymore. You can easily find Windows licenses on eBay for $2.

the reason linux is better for gamming is for when microsoft locks down windows to just the store killing steam and other apps for full market share might sound stupid but so many people i doubt even think that there are any options besides windows

I used Manjaro as my main OS for a couple months and it was awesome never having to reboot for updates. But not having the AdobeCC made me swap back to windows.

So I have an interesting take since I've been dailying Linux since 2008. It's been wonderful to see the sudden influx of games coming on to the platform in the past couple of years. My only issue is that I still have to boot up Windows (I've been dual booting for school and work) in order to get those handful of games I don't play on Console to run. But the graphics drivers are way better and the support has been amazing.

I wonder if we will ever see a version of Microsoft Office, AdobeCC, and the like come to light for Linux. Microsoft has gone to pains to release Powershell for Linux, even now let’s you add the Linux kernel to Windows, added .NET Framework Core (cross plat form) and the same is true for ASP.NET. Yet... where is Office. Where is Adobe, etc. Those are my main reasons I keep going back to MS. And I’ve been going back and forth for more than 12 years. Back when Ubuntu was an unknown dist. 

 

I want ant to see more coming out for Linux. Because I absolutely love it and it’s stability. But I need Visual Studio, and Office, etc.

Well a good suitable replacement for Microsoft Office is LibreOffice it's free and just as powerful and versatile. I don't use Adobe CC at all unless its for school and i can't get away with GIMP or Blender but I can understand the frustrations of not having that available in Linux. I know that Adobe has zero intentions of making that available for Linux users as well so that kinda sucks. Everyone has a different use case for there system though I've been extremely lucky that I've been able to get away with using Linux for 95% of my computing tasks for so long.
