Many people talk about over clocking the 1700x to 3.9 or 4 Ghx. Is that the core clock or the boost? Also is that reasonable to expect?

(I am pretty new at this)

specs:

1700x

2060 super

8 gb ram

 ASRock b450 pro4 motherboard (I think)

Also I game (mostly Fortnite), stream and record. Is that setup enough to get 144 frames?

Me and a friend have the 1700X as i am able to OC it all cores to 4Ghz stable AF.
He's not able to get it above 3,9Ghz. So there might be differences between the same model even.

But good cooling stable voltages are crucial.

Oh and for the other questions YES! No need to OC even.
I have 1060 6GB and i could get to 144fps. But i did turn some stuff down. But that was more personal preference.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

3.9-4 is the standard OC for 1st gen Ryzen (zen). Golden chips can hit 4.1 or so IIRC. 2nd gen Ryzen (Zen+) goes to 4.2-4.25 all core most of the time, 4.3 on a golden chip. 3rd gen Ryzen (Zen 2) IDK, from what I've read they're pushed to the limit at stock, I don't think they go much above that on an all core OC.

Thank you very much. But is the overclock the core or boost frequency? I’m confused. Also you mentioned good cooling. I have a hyper t4

All core constant.

But you can choose that for yourself.

Do NOT forget OCing is different per CPU even if the same model.
It IS a lot of work. So do not think you can do it in a day when you never tried.
This will take a couple days. Also stress testing is very important.
There are many youtube video's about how to go about it as well. ;)

I’ve over locked before quite a few times. It shows up in the bios as auto. Then I set it to manual and raise the bar and voltage. Also I have a hyper t4.
