Hi guys,

So im looking to build my first server, idealy to be used as a NAS, possibly transcoder, game server, Steam Backup, Photo sync, etc.

I plan on using unraid, and have partially worked out (and purchased) a build, but wanted some advice on final touches. Specifically im not sure around how much gap i need in a PSU, ie if system says it uses 515Watts is 650W PSU ok? etc.

As far as a case goes originally wanted something fancy but then decided that since its not a flashy RGB build or anything a case with lots of airflow and room for CPU coolers (which i also dont know what to go with) is probably a better idea. This would need to be a desktop style case and not a server case.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Firstly, considering you have not settled on a purpose for this 20core monster server, you should t build it, everthing you trying yo do is not going to 100% utilise your cpu or hardware power, nas can be ran on a very basic pc for like $50, NAS,game server, everything is going to be very little utilisation. Maybe consider looking into a new use for your monster server, or run all the above mentioned uses in that one server.

P.S you could also get cheaper price and im pretty sure PC part pickers totals cost is in USD and not AUD. (idk about that one)

Technology is NEVER easy :(

So the prices that i have entered as paid are my prices in AUD, also my profile is set to Australia and i see prices in AUD, not really using pc parts price listing for things not purchased as ebay is most of the time cheaper.

"Maybe consider looking into a new use for your monster server, or run all the above mentioned uses in that one server. "

This was the intention, running everything on the 1 server including game server.

3 x 8TB in Raid 5 for NAS and dockers

4TB drive dedicated drive for the Game Server

If i didnt go 20 core 2680 v2's what dual compatible CPU's would be recommended?

What about a used Dell R620 or R720?

I see several on ebay.com.au for about half that price with 2690 CPUs and 192GB of RAM

Example:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/High-End-Dell-PowerEdge-R620-Server-2x-2-90Ghz-E5-2690-8C-192GB-8x-600GB-10K-SAS/323815965361

The R620 uses 2.5" drives but you could still go with that and a 4 or 8 bay NAS and connect it up to the server via the network and store everything there and then use the server for the compute piece. The R720 will use 3.5" drives but will be bigger as well and should run a tad quieter but just for baseline, I have an R620 in my closet in my bedroom and with the door closed I don't hear it at night with everything else turned off, so they are quiet to begin with :)

Current Network Layout:

Current Build Log/PC:

Storage Server Setup:

Prior Build Log/PC:

That probably would have been a good idea if i hadn't already purchased RAM & Mobo. :( Also dont have the room for Server case, for now this is probably going to stored in rumpus room, or if it does go in my room its literally going to have to go on my desk. :( no closet for me. Kinda regret buying my motherboard like 5 days ago. :(
