Proper memory

Hi y'all. I am starting to build my first PC. I am on hold currently for the new ryzen 3800x. My question is concerning ddr4 memory. I have seen so many motherboards with 4 dimm slots but was told ryzen will oh use two. Is this true. I bought 4 sticks of 8 GB ddr4. I was assuming that meant 32Gb of memory. Is this true? Will ryzen only recognize the 16 GB of RAM? I am sorry if a question like this was asked already, I am new to all of this and really could use some advice. As far as use, I am not a hardcore gamer, just like to play on my days off from work. I have the Radeon 5700 XT.

if the same holds true on 3600 and 3600X, more factory overclock or even some binning wont make the 3800x a better deal than the 3700x

That's totally wrong. 2 sticks only beats 4 sticks in expandability and overclocking in general. OC part will depend on the board.

 

32GB is overkill for gaming anyway, even with Chrome running all the time I can't saturate 16GB.

imo when 32gb is a must for a gaming rig, European countries would have stopped arguing for pointless things

I have the 32Gb of RAM already. Should I use 16 GB and sell the remaining two sticks? If I use all 4 will that mean ryzen will use the 32gb or o ly 16? Will I be wasting space? Or slowing down performance?

Ryzen will recognize all 32gb but maybe you won't need them in the short term. If you need the money, sell them and use 16gb but if you can afford it, leave it. There is no harm on having a bit more ram and even Hardware Unboxed made a video showing it helps a little bit have 32gb instead of 16gb.

 

So, in the end, it will work fine, system will see and use 32gb. If you don't need the money, keep it.

 

I have 4x8GB sticks at 3400MHz running just fine on a X470.

Use all 4, that's why there are 4 slots on a motherboard, they all work

 

I too run 4x8 and have no issues.  Tho I do cross the 16GB barrier so depending on what you play you may too.  32GB is a smart choice for heavily modded games like Ark, Skyrim, Fallout 4, etc.
