Hi guys

Apologies I'm not active on here anymore, I am really busy and don't really have the time for it.

I am going to uni in September and I need a laptop for it.

I am studying motorsport engineering and we have dedicated computer labs with xeons but I'm not sure if some of the work will have to be done on laptops too so I may need a small bit of processing power.

I was taking a look and either I can go for a lighter weight slim model or a bulkier gaming model which seems to get more things.

For the lighter option I was looking at the Huawei mate book D but they have had bad press recently so I'm not sure if that's the best option. For the gaming option, there's a lot out there with stuff like a GTX 1050 which seem to be decently priced and would stop the need for me taking my desktop too. Although battery life and weight may be a concern.

Is there any models you would suggest? Feel free to ask questions to help get a better understanding of my needs too. I was thinking prime day is coming up so there may be a deal or two.

Many thanks

Pro

Edit: Budget maximum is £700

My Setup :P

Skylake: I7-6700|MSI B150 GAMING M3|16GB GSKILL RIPJAWS V|R9 280X (WILL BE 1070)|CRUCIAL MX300 + WD BLACK 1TB

Quadro GPUs would be better for what you're planning to do. Take a look at the MSI Workstations

From my experience, MSI laptops are very well built and have some of the best cooling even stock compared to other laptops.

Cheers, two things I forgot to mention are. I'm not sure of any of the programmes or workloads which are gonna be happening and preferably the budget maximum is £700 (I will add that to the main post now)

The budget is a bit too low matey. The cheapest one is the MSI WP65 and that goes for around GBP 1116

You're going to want to either increase your budget or look for used ones or perhaps someone else could recommend something else but keep in mind for professional work, Video editing, CAD, 3D Modeling, etc, Quadro GPUs are way better than the regular gaming series GPUs such as GTX or RTX.

Thanks for the help, the main use would just be general work from lectures and assignments. I assume CAD would be used as it's engineering but I'm not totally sure on that one.

I'm not too sure on what to go with. I will try to get some more money towards it. Would one of the gaming ones suffice for that sort of work I'd it wasnt all the time. I would like to game on it too in my free time to save taking my desktop.

Edit: I also couldn't find that WP65 available here in the UK

  • 5 weeks later...

I'd strongly recommend finding out what you're actually going to be expected to do! I doubt you'll be set heavy workstation tasks and not given the option to use a university desktop, but I'd contact your soon-to-be course tutors and ask. I'm in a similar situation so would be glad to know what conclusion you come to.

If you're going to stick to £700, this might be of interest: HP Pavilion 15-cs1004na (i5-8265u, GTX 1050, 8GB, 256GB SSD)
