Looking for some advice on a CPU upgrade for my home server.

I'm currently running a 3570s which handles system backups for 3 systems, a game server, and my owncloud server VM (which I'm not really happy with but that's for another post). OS is windows.

Recently my game server has become more active and it does OK but can struggle from time to time and doesn't leave really any room for expandability. The Owncloud server runs well when I'm just dealing with files but hits a wall as soon as picture and video viewing comes into play. I think this is due to the CPU only having 4c/4t so I can only allocate 2 cores at the most. When I have them both running and in use it's a mess. I'd like to run both of these simultaneously.

I was considering jumping up to a 3770 which would give me 4 more threads, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. I definitely need more cores/threads. Open to buying a new motherboard all together but I kinda want to stick with DDR3 since RAM isn't really the issue here. Advise me otherwise if you think it would be worthwhile to jump up to DDR4. I plan on buying everything used.

Requirements:

  • Lower power since it runs 24/7
  • Must be mITX
  • Budget $150 (after selling old hardware)

If you can find a motherboard go for some used xeon stuff, unless you need single core performance.

Otherwise people are going to be dumping Ryzen 1st gen 8 cores for cheap, but you need something more like $300 for upgrading to that.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Seems like the smallest (affordable) Xeons go is mATX unfortunately. I definitely need more cores though, I don't think single core performance would help me much.

Then I'd just go for a Ryzen 7 1700 after saving up a bit. It's probably the cheapest way to go past 4 cores so you're set for the future. Although then you need like a cheap/spare GPU to get a video output on Ryzen.

if your budget is $150...you can only do a CPU upgrade and thats to 3770k. Your mobo is either z/h 67 or z/h 77  which only supports ddr3 rams. Well, I guess you can get a nice cooler and do mild overclock on it. But your budget is sooo limited that upgrading to 3770k is the only choice. TBH, thats not much of an upgrade. You should save your money and upgrade to either a used 8600k/ 8700k (IMO, I think theses are the best value). Although, the cost of the upgrade will cost you at least 500~600usd. $200 for CPU/ $200 for z390/ $100~$200 for ram.

CPU: 8600k @4.9  (1.39v) |  Cooler: NH-U14s | Mobo: Asus Strix z390i | Ram: Gskill DDR4 Trident Z 3600 8GB x 2 16-16-16-36

GPU: Gigabyte G1 1080 GTX | Case: Prodigy ITX | Fans: NH-A14, (exhaust) NH-A12, (intake) NH-A20 (intake)

Samsung EVO 1tb | Samsung EVO 512gb x2 | Intel ssd 128gb

PSU: Powerstation 500W
