There was clearly not mass-level supply built-up yet (it did just release) but for proof that people bought them and were excited look at the "Q&A" tab on Newegg for the 3700x page.  Lots of buyers flooded in to comment after they purchased.  But no confirmation on the 3800x as that seems to be the real mystery here.

I understand what's is/isn't in stock, but people on Reddit are saying that the 3800x hasn't been able to be found for sale anywhere.  

 

Best Buy has it listed as "coming soon"

Yeah you may have a point, they never even showed up on these sites as for sale.  I did some testing with Newegg and could only find them listed as bundled with other stuff (like SSD, Memory, etc).  Looks like their supply is real bad of 3800x or got delayed badly.

Here's the NewEgg page I was trying to add to cart from (you add any of those bundles and it'll kick the CPU out of your cart saying it's not in stock, but it'll let you buy all that bundled crap).  https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=ryzen+3800x

Where is the 3800x listed anywhere on that page?

 

I'm not trying to come across rude/argumental.  If you can find me somewhere to order the 3800x i'd be thrilled.
