Laptop/Convertible to watch 4k IPhone Footage

So, my buddy is struggeling to watch his 4k IPhone Videos on his Acer 5741G.
It's Equipped with an i3-330m, 4GB Ram and an HD5470 Mobile. It's only got the built in 2.5" HDD

I never tinkled around with playing 4k Videos, so what's the matter?

Is it the Hardware, is it simply too old, or is it a problem, able to beeing solved through software?

He is considering buying an upgrade. Hes currently looking at these two:

- Galaxy Book 10.6 Convertible with an M3-7Y30, 4gb Ram and integrated HD 615 Graphics

- Acer Spin 3 Sp314-51-3414 with an I3-7020U, 4gb ram, 265GB SSD and integrated Graphics

Is any of these two able to playback 4k Footage? He doesnt want to convert every video, but still wanna playback it smoothly.

Or would a upgrade on his old Machine do the trick, like 8gb ram or an SSD?

I would really appreciate any Help!

He only tried Windows Media player. Could that be the Problem?

Windows built in programs struggle to play 4k footage for some reason, while VLC does it with ease. You can also try Potplayer, more modern UI.

He just tried it out. Sound works fine, but Video is still stuttering with VLC.

With hardware acceleration too?

But yeah, hardware update would be good.

Will the Acer Spin be able to play it?

I'd advice you at least get a version with 8gb of ram so it keeps being useable in the near future.

those both look very very low end tbh, i would get something with 8th gen i3, or ryzen 3 3200u at the very least.

I have no idea, if the iphone video is high bitrate then probably not i would guess.

Would that be enough to playback the 4k stuff? I dont want him to order it just to find out it still stutters
