Hello,

I have some issues choosing a good router. Everything I choosen before after I found shit tons of comments how bad are they. So I seek for advice here.

Budget - Around 100-200 eur (best if like closer to 150 eur~)

I used D-Link mid tier router(1gbit version) but 1 of the devices cable socket went out for a vacation...

Please suggest smth that:

Would have at least 4 sockets+Lan cable itself better if 5+ Lan or more of course if its possible for that price range as with mine 4 sockets I used them all and force to disconnect smth to connect other device.

Have decent wifi range, I live in a flat, its not a house, but still walls are pretty thick so wifi connection on the far opposite rooms are barely existent.

So main stuff to have: stronger wifi connection (wider range), 1gbit (my net is up to 1 gbit down/up so using router for 100mbit is just plain stupid xD) and 4 or better 5 cable connections for devices.

If your router currently gets a good connection speed, I wouldn't change it at all, instead get an 8 port gigabit switch for those extra ports you need, and a mesh system or couple of access points for better wifi.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

1) hmm good idea with a port, yeah my router gives a nice speed but its not too stable and Im not sure if its coz of router is cheap ass or just net.

2) what is mesh system? and how does access points work? do I need lan cable to them too or they connect through wifi ?

I can't help with picking a router but to solve your dilemma of not enough ports buy a switch. Then you can plug in as many things as you want, and allow you to buy a cheaper router because the only consumer routers I've seen that have >4 LAN ports are very expensive like $250~300+

yeah, but what about those access points? do they need lan cable to them coz that would be a problem for me :/

The mesh network patty-stone mentioned can be wireless repeaters. They take in the Wi-Fi signal and boost it. APs on the other hand would require their own Ethernet port and either a port that supports PoE or a standalone PoE injector.

You can solve the lack of Ethernet ports problem with a switch.

oh found some of those, costs like 25+ eurs here, got another problem with them then xD dont have any extra power socket( for power cable) any near my router location only in separate room, so I assume its much easier and convenient to just grab a new router ...

Still any suggestions regarding routers? fine if 4 sockets but 5 sockets options would be good to know.

For a simple application like this you don't need anything expensive. You can look at this if you want.

If you can't buy it from there you can search sites you do use or I can find other options.

Pretty much all low-mid range consumer routers are going to have 4 LAN + 1 WAN port. The switch makes this number irrelevant. Also buy a power strip. That'll solve the outlet problem.

I don't do a lot in the consumer router space so I can't confidently recommend you anything. If you wanted to enter the prosumer space I could recommend the Ubiquiti USG-US then if you need more than 7 ports you could look at a 16 port switch but that'd start to get expensive.

On a lot of prosumer/enterprise routers you only get one LAN port because it's expected that you're going to plug it into a switch. It also supports VOIP (Voice over IP) if you have a phone number provided by your ISP. It has no Wi-Fi which is where the AP's would come in but it's a prosumer device meant for deployment in small/medium offices and the like. I'll be buying one for my parents house in the near future.

If you want all the extra bells and whistles, you could go that route. It's gigabit capable and supports a/b/g/n/ac WiFi. It also appears to support the same mesh network feature so you could boost the range of it with similar repeaters.

1) yeah first one is no go then as its already costs 110~ here and + switch and no wifi which is 100% needed eeem not sure.

2) not totally needed but as for +70 eur for those features + wifi its could be an ice choice

If I would go with a first one for 110eur~ what would I need for a set up ?

Well if the only goal was Internet you'd need the router, a switch (preferably with PoE support), a WiFi AP (or 2 or 3), and something to control client handoff like the Ubiquiti Cloud Key.

The prosumer space gets expensive fast.

oh damn, no too difficult for the stuff I dont need. regular router still work in the far rom, I may only place some cheap ass router as an access point to boost wifi.

ideal would be to jsut buy switch but fawkin no where to plug power :D
