So I've had my 970 for like 3 or 4 years ago, and recently I noticed you can pick them up for about 100 bucks on ebay, I feel like it's time to give my pc some more performance, would this actually make a difference and be worthwhile to do? I have an 850W power supply in case I ever did something like this.

Nah, due to optimization reasons you'll never get as much performance boost as 2 cards might suggest on computing for gaming. For about $250 (selling the current card) you can get a GTX 1660, which is 980ti like performance in all games regardless of optimization for multiple GPUs.

I know their big set back was them scamming people out of the extra .5 GB, but I have't looked a the 1660 so I'll check it out.

I've seen the 1660 as cheap as 200 USD on Amazon. Might be a worth while investment over dual 970's. Plus you'd have to make sure your CPU and motherboard would handle dual cards. Not all motherboards are SLI certified despite having multiple slots. Running dual 970's would only yield maybe 75-90% more performance over one card depending on the game. A lot of newer games don't support or aren't optimized for SLI anyways.

SLI will bring a lot of problems or even graphical glitches in some games. If you are fine with running some games on only one of those then you can try it but I think its not worth it. Oh and VRAM doesnt stack so you will still have the same amount. GTX 970 was a good gpu a solid 3.5/4 but you should replace it if you want more performance.
