Lapping really isnt worth it. I did it on 2x Q9550, and a Q6600 in 2008/2009. It took a few degrees off the temps, I will try and find some pictures if I still have them, and the spreadsheet I made wth the differences.

I lapped the heatsinks and CPUs until there was a vacumn formed between them when i pressed the heatsink on the IHS. I didnt use any thermal paste after they were lapped.

It really isnt worth it to be honest. I would get a decent watercooling loop instead.

wether its worth it is up to you, i personally wouldnt do it to a new cpu unless its out of warrenty, and id take a pic of the top first to record steppin info etc.
i still might not do it then in case i wanted to resell it a year later and replace it with a newer model or setup..
that said im a tinkerer so i might do it...

Read the first post.

Intel need to remove the heatspreader when you send it in for RMA anyway.

Why would you not use thermal paste ?

I did it with a E6700 and an E8400 and their heatsinks and saw almost 10*C difference.

I used a very thin film of TIM.  Even though they look mirror smooth there will still be microscopic flaws that the paste would need to fill.

Nothing to see here - move along.

becasue it will just wring together and stay on of its flat enough, we have some grade 0 paraelles at my work which are 12"X1"X2" and one can hold the other one off the table if you wring them properly.

If you are confident that your cpu's were flat to such tolerances then i'm happy for you.

Nothing to see here - move along.
