m.2 storage help

so  im hear again needing more pc help i just built my pc at xmas so i am a bit new but have a breif understanding of pc, so my issue is that i want to upgrade my storage and i wanted to get another m.2 as they way faster that ssd i allready have a m.2 ssd in the slot the ,i only have one m.2 slot on my motherboard so i was thinking of getting a pcie 3.0 m.2 card for more space but i have an issue, my mobo asus strix b350-f has only 20 pcie lanes 16 for gpu the 4 for the m.2 slot

so i dont have any lanes left. the mobo has 2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or x8/x4) the x8 and x4 is if i put a gpu in the second slot and. the other slots are connected to the chipset 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (max at x4 mode) and 3 x PCIe 2.0 x1  3 x PCIe 2.0 x1. and when useing the m.2 slot my sata pots 5/6 are dissabled.

so i want to add a x16 pcie 3.0 m.2 card can i do this without makeing my gpu go slower

or if adding a x16 m.2 card slow down my gpu or is it only if you put a gpu in the secondary slot that it slows down your gpu in the first slot?

It won't, as you can't split the main x16 on b350

 

If you want another m.2, just get a pcie to m.2 adapter, and run another drive. It will run at pcie2 x4 but, the speed really won't matter.

and is getting a pcie 3.0 x16 ok even if it runs ar x 4 speed?

It will work fine in a x16 slot.

 

You can boot form that.

yea, the second drive will be slower as its only pcie gen 2 x4, not gen 3. 

 

Id get a cheaper m.2 drive personally or a sata ssd, the performance won't matter much.

You need a system tht supports pice bifurcation to use that card, so don't get it.

 

If you go x470, it won't support those cards, there made for systems like threadripper and x299, with many more pcie lanes.

 

Why would you get x470? Your not really getting much more unless you want dual gpu.

i was thinking on upgrading my mobo for more pcie lanes but i have looked into x470 and they dont look like it has to 2 3.0 pciex16 slots runnin at x16 speed just wanted more pcie lanes for upgrade ability i might just save a wait for x570 if the price is right doubt it tho

getting x570 or x470 won't give you any more pcie lanes, thats limited by the platform, so go threadripper or x299 or dual socket if you need more pcie lanes.

 

But why do you need more pcie lanes? You have more than enough for a gpu + 2 pcie ssds.
