Replacement for MD1200

Alright so a few months ago I bought a Dell MD1200 off ebay. It's worked great until now but as things are changing and moving around I need a replacement for it as it is just far far too loud in its new location. I would prefer a DAS option to just straight up replace it as it's attached to my R710 and quite integrated into everything.

Any suggestions?

If it works fine otherwise you can quiet these boxes easily by putting reisistors on the fans or by getting quieter fans for it.

If you want to get very quiet the only option is to make a custom JBOD using a Supermicro chassis and external to internal SAS HBAs otherwise modding standard disk enclosures is all you can do, none of them are quiet.

I have an MD1200 and can confirm, they're as loud as jet engines - easily twice as loud as my T410 or x3650 M4 servers.

 

As others have said, you can try modding the fans with resistors.

 

Otherwise, there's not really a good solution for a "true" purpose built DAS, since they're usually all loud, and the good ones are super expensive (MD1200's go for $400+ CAD on eBay on the low end typically - with most of the listings being closer to $700+ CAD).

Creating a custom "DAS" using a Server chassis like this is probably the "best" way to create a good quiet chassis.

 

I've considered replacing my MD1200 with a custom built one - but the MD1200 is just so goddamn bullet proof.
