Bottle-necking CPU and GPU Advice

Brothermoss

Hi Guys

I need some advice in regards to GPU upgrade, I have a Intel I5 4690k CPU, 16 gb ram and a gtx 970 and i am looking to upgrade the GPU.

I understand that some games are more CPU intensive and other are more GPU intensive however I want to know which GPU i should upgrade to before my CPU would bottle-neck?

for instance a 1070?

thank you very much for your help

BTW this website helps but not sure about its accuracy

If you OC that 4690K to 4.5GHz or so you'll be able to appropriately use anything up to and including a 1080Ti, 2080, Radeon V at 1440p.

If you stay at 1080p, a 1070 would work great.  Or a 1660Ti or Vega 56.

Basically, use a GPU and resolution that utilizes the 4690K properly.

That site is of almost little use because bottlenecking, as you say, depends on whether or not the game is CPU intensive.

In this situation, I'd say figure out how much you want to spend on a new video card and get the best one you can afford. At the end of the day you're likely to get an upgrade even if you can't use the card's full power.

so you dont think its a waste of money to get a better card like a 1070? I have overclocked the CPU to 4.3 ghz but dont have water cooler so i dont think i can push it anymore

thanks for your reply

I am just not sure if it is a waste of money to buy a 1080 or 1070 because of my CPU

If you're planning on never upgrading your system any time soon or buying a new video card with your next one, then the concern of a bottleneck is more valid. If neither are true, then my recommendation is the same.

I originally had a 4690K when I bought my 1080Ti and 35" 1440p Ultrawide.  Ran well together, I was very happy.  I upgraded when my buddy's son had a birthday and I gave him the 4690K guts and went to an 8700K.

You can't go wrong leapfrogging like that.  New GPU, then new CPU, then new GPU, etc.
