Different Zephyrus GX701 Configurations

I am planning on getting the GX701 in August. I am in the process of choosing a specific model and until today I was quite certain that the RTX 2080MQ 9750H was the fastest model (in terms of gaming/graphical performance), then the RTX 2080MQ 8750H, then the RTX 2070(HQ?) 9750H. The reason that I put a "?" by MAX-Q in the last one is that I have seen several reviewers say that this is a "full" 2070, and not max-q design. If this were the case, wouldn't it be more powerful than a 2080MQ? So in short, I would like to know which GX701 configuration is the most powerful for gaming. Thanks!

It's a full 2070. I'll stick to 2070 since 2080MQ in it is the 90W variant which is good but not that great compared to 2070N

Go for 9750H if possible

Open to other options besides GX701?

Ok, that makes sense. I also realized that the clocks were much higher on the 2070 than the 2080mq. I am open to other laptop suggestions, price is not too much of a concern but it would have to be somewhat portable, so not the 51m or anything like that. Mostly just looking for power and portability, which the GX701 seems to have for the most part.

Where are you from? Must it be 17 inch? Preferred max weight in kg/lbs? No preference on battery life?

Before I upgraded to my current Alienware Area-51m, I had an Alienware m15 which I really loved. It has superb build quality and is very thin and light yet packs a ton of power. Their 2080 Max-Q is the 90W variant not the 80W present in other laptops so it will offer better performance than other 2080 Max-Q and honestly, that's all you need it has enough power to run any game at max settings. Also, you can choose the model with the 90WHr battery if you want a longer battery life.

See the different models here: Alienware m15

I bought mine from HIDevolution as their quality control is superb and they have thermal mods which I wouldn't do without with today's fast laptops which sport high end CPUs. For example, in the laptop configurator, you can choose "Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut + Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads", that alone reduces temps by 15C

Alienware m16 R1 | AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX | SK Hynix 64 GB 5200 MHz DDR5 RAM | GeForce RTX 4090 16 GB GDDR6 | 16" QHD+ (2560 x 1600) 240Hz, 3ms 300-nits Screen | 2x Samsung 990 PRO 4TB SSDs + WD_BLACK SN770M 2TB SSD | Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 | Windows 11 Pro

I am from the US, Florida to be specific. It does not have to be a 17 inch because I will be using an external monitor 60% of the time, although it would be preferred. I would want the weight to be no more than 4.5kg/10lbs. I would like somewhat good battery life, as I will be using it for some school. I know that most gaming laptops don't have a great battery life, which is why I appreciated the Optimus mode on the G701, so when I am not charging I really don't need GSYNC or use of the dedicated GPU.

Then take a look at the MSI GS65

Would it run faster than the GX701 with the "full" 2070? From what I can see the GS65 only comes with a 2070mq, and the GS75 with a 2080mq. Unless it has a much better cooling solution, I don't see how it would have any performance advantage.

No it wouldn't, I merely mentioned it because you said you are not constrained to 17 inch models so I wanted to give you another option but really, if it was my money, I'd for got either the Alienware m15 I listed above or the MSI GE75 Raider as that has the full fledged GPUs not Max-Q

If it is a full sized 2070 I would still recommend the 2080 max q. It would be more power efficient and still have similar performance to the 2070.

OK, so I have narrowed it down to the GE75 Raider with the 2080 and the GX701 with the 2070. I would assume that the GE75 is more powerful, but could you confirm? Also, which one would you just recommend in general? ATM I am leaning towards the G701 just because it is less expensive, and I personally like the aesthetic better. But if the raider has a huge performance advantage, I might get it instead.

The GE75 Raider does have better performance if you went with the 2080 model and would certainly be more future proof. Additionally, I've owned 10s of laptops throughout the years. The MSI ones that I've owned not once did they have an issue, I had a GT73VR Titan Pro, GT75 Titan 7RG,m and GT75 Titan 8RG. I only sold them to upgrade but they all worked perfectly out of the box. Additionally, MSI's driver support and customer service is better than ASUS. I know price is a determining factor sometimes but if you can, plunge on to the bext.

One more thing, the Keyboard is better on the MSI.

I'll echo this.  So I actually bought a gx701 8750h 2080 MQ.  The 9th gen stuff got announced just after so I returned it and just got my GE75 9980h 2080.  The 2080 is a nice bump from the 2080 MQ and should be even a bit more than that 2070.  Also having used both the keyboard is much better on the ge75 IMHO.

I loved the gx701, the build quality in particular was great, the thinness was great too.  Though that performance boost and keyboard boost is well worth it in the GE75.  Also the gx701 has only the one m.2 slot and half its memory soldered in.  The ge75 has two sodimm slots, two m.2 slots, and even a 2.5" bay.  So upgradeability is a nice bonus.

You do lose gsync and the ge75 screens tend to have some backlight bleed (though is a bit brighter).  Again all worth the tradeoffs since the extra FPS in ge75 is nice.

GX701 will have a bit of struggle to achieve 4 hrs battery life even in Optimus mode, in fact most 2070 laptops will struggle despite fairly big battery and with Optimus. Unless you're fine with 2060/2070MQ or lower battery life...
