I just ordered a Samsung 840 EVO 120gb as I had a bit of money and wanted to get an SSD. Now I know it comes with its own data transfer software and I plan to use it, but Im going from a 1tb HDD to a 120gb as my boot drive.

The only thing I want to put on the SSD is Windows, Adobe Creative suite and a few games. Will I be able to just transfer them only, and will the other programs still work on the other disk? as I have a 320gb steam library as well.

In case files have to be moved I have a 2tb Green and a 1tb external. I know I might have to re install a few things.

Thanks, Alfie.

Reinstall windows onto your SSD and just reinstall all your games onto the HDD/SSD. Its a lengthy process, but its worth it in the end :D

With the data transfer software, you can select what folders you want to copy.

You will need to re-"intitialize" your steam libary. basically, just copy all your local game data to where ever you set up the new libary.

Edit: A fresh reinstall might be a cleaner way of doing things.

Thanks for all the reply, I will look in to a fresh install. I will have to move a lot of files as well, I using about 2.5 tb, but allot of stuff can go on to external HDDs. Only thing stopping me is I will have to re download a lot of stuff, oh well.

I need to see if I can back up BF4, Minecraft, and AC4 (Which is on uplay, got it free with the gtx 780)

I went through the same thing as you. I bought a Samsung 840 120GB (non-evo) and I couldn't migrate Windows with the Data Migration tool because it's 120GB. Would have worked with 250GB though. So yeah, the only way is to do a clean install, unfortunately :(

I use Gamesave manager to backup my games: http://www.gamesave-manager.com/

but i think BF4 and AC4 should backup your data to the 'cloud'

I will be doing a fresh install, but I only have an external blu ray drive. Can I still install windows using it or does it have to be internal? as I don't have the internal one I used before.

You should never recover hard drive data/OS onto a SSD anyway. Fresh install is the best option. Just make backups of your games
