Alienware 17 vs Asus ZEPHYRUS GX501

I’ve been planning on buying a new laptop for a while now, and my two best options are either Asus ZEPHYRUS with 1080 max q, or Alienware 17 R5 with a 1070. Both are the around the same price, however I’m not sure about Asus Zephyrus’s durability as i heard many people having QA issues with it.

Which one would you guys go far and why? Thanks in advance

Neither because I've never understood the use of a laptop when a desktop is much better.

can you use it on a plane?

can you bring it back and forth from your home and to work?

can you use it on a bench in a park?

can you use it at a starbucks?

can you bring it to somewhere when you're on vacation?

etc.

OP: why not a thin and light + a gaming desktop?

I’m a student studying abroad so I don’t really have any room to buy a desktop atm

I've never flown on a plane. I've never had a desire to game while working. I've never had a desire to make it easier for a dude to steal something from me. I've never been to a Starbucks. I've never went on vacation with a desire to play video games(might as well stay home if you're just traveling to game).

If one must game on a laptop, why overpay for such a laptop when there's much cheaper ones around $750 - $900 that pretty much game the same? The same slow ass 2.3 base clock CPU's with the chance to boost up to 4.0 GHz to quickly melt the thing is in all these laptops. I'll stick to gaming at home on much better hardware with much cooler parts.

@Lifelessgamer122 Students studying abroad don't have a place to lay their bones?

You’re wasting my time here. Don’t expect any more replies if you’ll continue to be useless.

If money isn't an issue, go with the Alienware 17. The RTX technology of the Asus ZEPHYRUS is what is useless in 2019. Very few games take advantage of the technology right now. If you'd like to pay less for a similar gaming experience, go for something like an MSI GF63.

To be honest, the one you choose should be centered around the games you're gonna be playing. And I'm not trying to waste your time. You asked, "Which one would you guys go far and why?" and I answered that question as honest as I could.

Also, I could be wrong but I feel this question would get better results in this section of LTT... Laptops and Pre-Built Systems.

If you don't want to help, please don't comment. I was saying why some people might want to use a laptop.

OP: how about a 15" with a 1050 ti + eGPU (i.e. 2080)

I’m an Architecture student therefore I’ll need to render 3D models when I take my laptop to University. The Zephyrus is on sale now so it’s close to buying a 1050ti + egpu.

Help is exactly my intention. The topic question is "Which one would you guys go far and why?". I believe I answered it flawlessly throughout my comments. Reread everything I typed. Especially the comment directly above your last comment. It's possible you missed it.

My budget is around £1700 ($ around 2800). Battery life doesn’t matter since I tend to plug the charger wherever I go. Weight isn’t much of an issue as durability and longevity is for me.

The Alienware is a better built machine. I had one once and was very happy with it. They are easy to upgrade certain things too. The ASUS will be MUCH lighter tough and I do like their products. There isn't a huge difference in the GPU's though. The 1070 in the Alienware is very close to a desktop 1070 and it is overclocked too. The 1080 Max-Q will be underclocked to the desktop counterpart. What CPU is in either? That might make a difference. I assume the both have 16GB DDR4 2400GHz.

Well Asus Zephyrus has 16gb DDR4 2.2GHz while Alienware has 16gb GDDR5 2.2GHZ. Both have i7-8750H. I’m also planning on rendering 3D models so does it make a difference between the 2 in terms of CPU performance?

I'm a little confused, these are all unrelated things but I think I get the idea. Since the both have the hexacore i7 + 16GB RAM, they should be very similar. the 1080 Max-Q is about 3% faster then the 1070 so not a huge difference. I would say Alienware is more heavy duty and ASUS more portable.

Can you even still get a 17 R5? Dell just replaced mine with an m17 as the R5's are end of life! They are a BIG beast though but very well built. Mine had heat problems but was an i9 with a 1080
