I am a developer and want to built my new system ,finalises few CPUs i5-9600k, i7-9700, i7-9700k .my budget is tight and I want a CPU which is cheap and best for my needs . I want a system for Android development, full stack development , ML/AI, data analysis . Will i5-9600k be sufficient for my needs (actually it's pricing are most comfortable for me ) or should I need to go for i7-9700 ? And what will you suggest for other peripherals like MB etc ?consider a built worthy for coming 4 to 5 years. Your recommendations/suggestions will be really helpful ,thank you!

I think you want more cores for your stated workloads, you should get a Ryzen processor instead.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

If you can afford an i7, i think you should prioritize that.

Other hardware can be added later, like memory or gpu (you really don't need a extra gpu to code).

But since you're thigh on budget, why not get a Ryzen system?

Overall build cost will much lower for the performance you will get.

I recommend Ryzen 7 2700.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

Consider an i7-8700 on a H370 motherboard.

In general lots of fast (ssd) storage helps in development environments. While NVMe is nice, more SATA III ssd storage will likely offer better overall performance.

@brob thinking to go for i7-9700 as it's 9th gen and expecting price near to 8700 also 8700 has multithreading which I'm avoiding considering spectre/melting security leaks , 9700 don't support multithreading but has more cores (8) so I hope it's good ,what do you say?

@Oalei Actually my system has got random reboot problem ,my MB (dh87mc intel) shows a red light blinking near PROCHOT and it restarts though when I tried to check temps of different cores it was near 65 when it got restarts so don't feel it's a heat issue ,my CPU is i3-4130 an locked one so stock cooler seems enough isn't it? Right now it's difficult to wait for two months ,also I'm not sure it's 2 months or even more :(

@SupaKomputa @fasauceome I have checked CPU benchmark and found i7-9700x/8700 beats Ryzen 7 2700 also 8700 price is almost same as Ryzen 7 2700 . Further I found AMD don't have as much virtualization support as intel in developer community so choosing intel ,what do you suggest now ?

And thank you all for your responses !

2700 : 8 core 16 threads, $209

8700 : 6 cores 12 threads, $370

More cores is better for virtualization. AMD also supports virtualization, check this page

Yes intel beats AMD in benchmark, it's no secret that they have higher clockspeed.

In performance Intel beat AMD in about 5-10%, but for the cost of almost 90% more.

That's only talking about the CPU, you also adding the cost of Motherboard, which intel is usually cost more.

This is a capture from newegg.

Do you mean the website Userbenchmark? That site is very inaccurate.

AI and ML loves cores, my friend's development and machine learning rig is a dual Xeon setup with a Titan V. You really do want more cores.

well i would definetly reccomend a Ryzen because its not that expensive and gives good performance/dollar. Yeah so get a Ryzen 7 with RTX 2060 and you good to go, IMO

Spectre and Meltdown have to be targeted to specific systems. If you deal with highly sensitive or very valuable data then it is a concern. Otherwise it is most likely not worth the trouble to tailor exploits to your system. See https://meltdownattack.com/

As far as I know multithreading makes no difference to either vulnerability.

While Intel has announced an i7-9700, I have yet to find them available to the general public. Depending on price, it would be a good choice as performance will most probably be a touch better than the i7-8700.

In my experience the bulk of non-cgi based development is very lightly threaded. Few compilers and build systems are multithreaded, so higher performance cores do better. The higher clocks and higher performance of Intel cores generally make these cpu a better choice for non-cgi development systems when prices are very similar. Not to say that cpu like the 2700X are poor choices. It really comes down to budget and total system costs.
