So right now I have an i5 7600k and I'm looking to upgrade my cpu. The PC is used mainly for gaming but also a lot of digital art on clip studio paint. There will be some streaming in that mix too but the gaming and clip studio are the priority

I was looking at an i5 9600k but I've heard mixed reviews and I'm wondering if I should just pop the extra cash and go for an i7 8/9700k

I'm not sure what would actually be better, could totally use some advice

Cheers

Why not upgrade to Ryzen? You'll need a new motherboard anyway for 8th/9th gen

I'd recommend waiting for Zen 2 which comes out July but is being announced in literally 9 days

Ryzen 7 3700X / 16GB RAM / Optane SSD / GTX 1650 / Solus Linux

Agree with waiting for Zen 2 announcement on the 28th, then decide. What is the rest of your build? Maybe you just need a new GPU.

I got a geforce gtx 1060, 16gb ddr4

I was debating ryzen but didn't know how much that would affect my gaming performance

What resolution are you gaming at? You're unlikely to get any significant improvement upgrading the CPU. I assumed high settings and a 1060 with 6 GB of RAM:

Pretty sure you'd need a new mobo for 8th and 9th gen

Gaming performance will be the same if you grab something like a r7 2700x, as you have a i5 7600k; however multi core performance will improve significantly (close to the 9900K). The new Zen 2 CPUs apparently make the single core performance better so you don't have to buy a top of the line CPU to match the single-core performance

I really think you can hang on to that 7600k for a while longer. A GPU upgrade will go much, much further for gaming.

If you insist on a CPU upgrade, though, I agree to wait and see what Zen2 does to the market.

If you're only considering CPUs right now, for gaming only, the 9600K is an excellent choice that handily beats out all of the Ryzen chips. There's plenty of data out there supporting that. As for streaming, the 9600K can fall flat depending on the game. If you're serious about streaming, go for the 9700k for and uncompromised experience or the 2700x to save some money and get an experience close to the 9700k.
