Can someone explain to me what exactly raid is why you need a raid card, how many drives you can hook up to it and what the different raids are like 1,0,5 etc.

FYI, you don't need a RAID card for basic ones like 0 and 1. Software "fakeRAID" would handle those with no issues. You really only need hardware RAID cards for levels with parity calculations like 5, 6. Otherwise the writes would be extremely slow/

That statement might have been true 5+ years ago when CPUs were much slower, but nowadays good implementations of software raid can be just as fast as hardware.

XOR calculations in software (aka on the CPU instead of a hardware accelerator ASIC) are speedy enough for most applications.
