Current situation:

I have 3 x 1TB WD Black HDDs in my be quiet 700 case alongside my 500GB SSD.

HDDs are too loud and cause case rattle so much so that I have disconnected them for now.

What I need:

A NAS with 4TB storage (mirrored so 8TB total) that I can have in a separate room so I don't have to hear it.

I have had a look at off the shelf options from the likes of WD and Synology, but they don't really have glowing reviews. Most people seems to be of the opinion that the backup software doesn't work properly.

Can anyone please recommend me a solution? Budget of no more than £300. Most bang for the lowest buck the better.

Also if I could repurpose my current 1TB HDDs that would be good.

Thanks guys!

That's why I mentioned if possible to reuse my current HDDs because if I have to get 2x 4TB HDDs also that would be another £200. What do you think?

The smallest disk will determine the maximum amount of storage used for each disk.

Even by building your own NAS you would overshoot a budget of £300.

Dang! What would be the lowest amount you would recommend spending to get a reliable NAS to suit my requirements?

Any suggestions for off the shelf or DIY? I have never built one before though. I am fine building PCs, but have no experience with NAS software.

I mean, it's like building a PC but with more HDDs and less computing power than your average PC.

DIY:

"Cheap" off-the-shelf (diskless) I found:

Thanks for the suggestion, dude. I'll have to try and see if my budget could stretch to this. Do you have any suggestions for what NAS software to run on this? Again, I have no experience of this and have never ran a raid set-up either.

Buy a used computer even one from 5 years ago should work, or if you can find a cheap server board they work too and they shouldn't be expensive at all, for nas software you can look at FreeNas and XigmaNAS but only if you are planning on using the system for nas only.
