multiple thermal pads

hypothetical question here. If i have a 2mm gap and only a sheet of 0,5mm thermal pad would it impact thermals alot if i stack 4 on each other?

I guess it depends what you're cooling but a 2mm gap is pretty big.

just some vrm mosfets or gddr5 but its just hypothetical if stacking them would affect thermals alot

I honestly don't know but they do sell copper shims which you can stick to components to take up gaps, maybe some shims on the parts to close the gap then thermal pad to do the rest.

That would get you a .5mm gap so some thermal adhesive tape, shim, pad, heat sink.

People do this to cool the VRMs in the dell XPS 15. It apparently works.

It mosty likely would impact thermals as its more "stuff" for the heat to go through before it gets to the cooler/waterblock

Yeah but my point is if having the little airgaps from pad to pad would influence temps alot

I would checkout dave2ds video on the dell XPS 9560. I believe he stacked multiple heat pads on that video.

Never seen a problem myself but something is better than nothing. Wasn’t long term either.
