Wanting to build an ITX machine that works like a barebones PC.

My dad mainly uses word processing and a little bit of powerpoint for work (along with web browsing), and works both from home and from office, about half the week in each location. He wants a small light PC he can take with him between locations.

A laptop has been considered, but he would never use the peripheries that are built-in, and wants to customize it later.

Needs an Optical drive too

This is what i have so far:

Corsair 250D or Bitfenix Prodigy
http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cases/Slim_-_Micro_-_Mini_ATX_-_ITX/53521-CC250D

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cases/Slim_-_Micro_-_Mini_ATX_-_ITX/51686-PHENOM-WH-MINI

Corsair VS450W PSU
http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Power_Supplies/ATX/48556-CMPSU-VS450

Intel i3 4130

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/CPU/Intel_Socket_1150/51370-BX80646I34130

ASUS H87I-PLUS mobo

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1150/49970-H87I-PLUS

2GB Corsair RAM (nothing too special)

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/DDR3/35757-VS2GB1333D3

Seagate Barracuda 500GB

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Hard_Drives_&_SSDs/SATA_3.5%22_Drives/42352-ST500DM002

Samsung Optical Drive

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Optical_Drives_&_Media/DVD_Writer/53227-SH-224DB_BSBE

Comes out to under $600

Like i said, nothing too fancy. Doesn't need to be too powered.

If anyone can think of a better component to use (remember: has to ship to Australia) I'd love to hear it =)

You can prolly go with alot smaller case, and you are overshooting your power requirement by about 300w.

EDIT: Found a decently okay case with about all the power you will be needing. http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cases/Slim_-_Micro_-_Mini_ATX_-_ITX/43998-ISK300-150

EDIT EDIT: If he wants something really small (like about or the same size as an xbox360s) then there is this case http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cases/Slim_-_Micro_-_Mini_ATX_-_ITX/44229-ISK110-VESA although it is cutting it a bit close on the power and he would need to get an external dvd player (which isnt that bad IMO)

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Also since I since it doesnt look like your system is very demanding you could prolly stand to go with a cheaper motherboard as well http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1150/50312-B85M-ITX

600$ is waaay too much for word, You can game at 700$ so, go with amd apu.

EDIT: You should look into intel NUC. Intel NUC looks best for your purposes.

How about getting an Intel NUC or a Gigabyte Brix and then if the optical drive is really needed, he could get an external one. Those things are truly small and I do believe are the next units of computing (if phones don't become our processing station)

The Prodigy is laughably huge, the 250D is still big for something that will be toted around but it's a better choice size wise.

You guys don't have much in the way of small cases over there it seems but I've put this together, I even used the Aus. PC Part Picker. It's got a bigger HDD and a better PSU and it's under your $600 build. You could add more storage if need be or maybe even squeeze in an i5 or something.

Maybe go for a nice amd a6 build, you will spend even less, and it is just good for tasks above, everything else is good :D
