Hi, I recently saw some videos about home servers/NAS and some gaming dedicated servers and thought it would be really cool to mess around with as a hobby, i randomly in passing i was talking to my friend about it over the internet and it turned out he works at a server management company.
He let me know that normally they give away the servers that they don't use anymore and that he'll just give me a spare one he has laying around.
Presumably it's a good deal, it's a Dell Poweredge T410 and since its only 30 bucks with shipping due to a discount he has at a shipping company i jumped on it.
I'm not new to pc's just new to severs and not sure what all i could do with this, as far as i know its all stock.
Do you  think this will work as a machine to learn on and maybe use in the future?
Any feedback is appreciated!

Nice system, you can get it in twin CPU config, stupid amounts of RAM for cheap, and lots of hardware RAID goodness.

Depending on the power supply config, there may or may not be extra cables for a proper video card, otherwise you are stuck with 25 watt max through the PCIe slots, so heads up on that.

You won't be able to place this machine around 50 Meters of where you want to sleep. Cooling fans with the sound of a V12

Not *entirely* true. I own several PowerEdges, including a T310 (one step below) and while the startup can be loud, it's quite easy to drop a different fan in with a rheostat on it and slow it down to the point it's tolerable.

I've tried SpeedFan software but it doesn't see the hardware controller (no surprise really, it's a server)

only slightly does it worry me, mainly because it will be in the same room as everything, but i also record videos and wouldn't wanna pick that up so ill definitely be changing fans.
and ideas as to which fan to use?
Otherwise, thanks so much for the reply!

well, for starters the fan connectors are (of course) proprietary when it comes to the  connectors. 5pin IIRC (not at my T310 right now) so you'll need an adapter.

but looking around on this, it's not so straightforward.

That might start you in the right direction.

I'm considering an AIO water cooled solution as an experiment for mine, just to see what happens.

Will let you know.
