CentOS support

I am ditching windows and am trying to find the best distro to swap to. My main objectives are being able to use Davanci Resolve, which officially only support CentOS and REHL, gaming with proton, and using GIMP. I have only used CentOS on my VPSes in server mode without a desktop environment. So I was wondering how it fairs in terms of updating the kernel and support for GPU drivers and so on. Thanks

Just keeping this here as a Yeah I don't really like Ubuntu. I currently have Manjaro installed but resolve isn't launching. I might try PopOS or dig deeper into trying to make it work

There might be a bit more you need to do, such as symlinking dependencies so that resolve doesn't explode.

You can also just run something like ubuntu and install resolv on there.

Because centOS is a pretty ancient linux distro it is realy stable because it still gets a lot of support. (thats why it is a server distro)

But i still don't recoment it for a normal PC/desktop for a server it is great how ever.

 

Ubuntu/distros that come from ubuntu are a lot of the time a good choose.

CentOS isn't really meant to be used as desktop operating systems... DaVinci Resolve should work on Fedora too and can be installed in Ubuntu and other distros too with a bit of work.

 

Regardless, CentOS 8 isn't that far off as far as I know and that should come with a more recent kernel and userland.

It is, no less then RHEL.  But it's more geared towards rock solid workstations.  However Fedora being upstream is also geared at workstation, with more recent packages.  CENTOS 8 is based on Fedora 28, so if you are looking at gaming, I would still do Fedora 30.

Well, RHEL isn't what I'd consider a desktop oriented system either. Fedora is. That doesn't mean you can't run CentOS as a desktop OS but you'll run into a few hassles and of course you'll be dealing with pretty old software.
