a friend of mine is thinking of upgrading his cpu he has the i7 4770k and is thinking about upgrading to the i7 8700k would that be a good upgrade or would it be overkill for gaming and if its overkill what cpu would you recomend


he has a 1080 graphics card

I think the 4770k still good enough for most games with the 1080.

Is he facing bottlenecks? Has he overclocked? What motherboard and CPU cooler is he using?

 

There are new Ryzen CPUs coming out very soon, wait for those.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

 

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Agree, moving to 8700k would need an overhaul.

When the Ryzen 3000 arrive, it too will be outdated.

So i suggest save the money and wait.
