soo my friends psu gave out a couple of months ago.

since then we got a replacement unit which seems to work.

but i fear the mainboard got fucked in the crash.

turning the system on there quick splash of smoke and then i guess the psu preotection triggers and turns it all off.

so my hopes are that cpu and ram are fine and only the mobo got trashed. visual inspection leads me to believe theyre fine.

my thought was wether to get him a used z97 board or just sell the cpu and ram and upgrade all together.

which would you  recommend and if upgrade then what would you recommend to upgrade to?

currently its a 4790k and 4x4 gb of corsiar vengeance ram.

update: i just talked to the guy and if we were going to upgrade it would also be used hardware. so just keep that in mind for recommendations

get a replacement board. You don’t need an upgrade other than that unless you want to. The processor you have is fine.

hmm yeah but used board are like 80 bucks with 50 euro outliers

A replacement motherboard would fix it, the VRM on the one you have now (the part that regulates voltages) has failed and is giving too much electricity to the parts.
