Blu Ray drive questions

Donut417

I got me a Plex Server and I have begun digitizing disks. I currently have a DVD rom that I have used to get some of my movies. Issue is some of my movies are on blu ray. Im also looking at buying a 4K TV so 4K blu rays might be in the future. So I have a few questions concerning blu ray drives.

  1. Does a blu ray drive have to "Support 4K" or does it matter?
  2. If I decided on an external drive does USB 2.0 or 3.0 matter or is it all the same?
  3. Im going to take it most drives should work in Linux?
  4. What kind of File sizes should I expect from Make MKV for 1080p disk vs 4K disks?
  5. Any drive recommendations?

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Any standard BR disc will work in any BR drive. At the moment to play/rip UHD BR disc you need to have a specific drive with specific firmware.

Personally I use a LG BH16NS55 with 1.02.

USB2 is fine for DVD/BR but doesn't quite make it for UHD. USB3 is required.

Yes all drives work in Linux. I haven't ever had issues ripping discs for my Plex server.

DVD is normally around 5-10gb. BR around 20-35gb and UHD 50-85gb.
