So I'm starting a website design company, and I'm going to be hosting customers websites in-house. Once I build or get a server I'm going to be taking over my business partners clients, and I'll be hosting around 25 websites to start. Do you guys have any recommendations on hardware?

For a small scale operation, I'd recommend just outsourcing the hosting to someone that has reseller accounts. It's in a real server farm, and you get someone else to blame when something goes wrong. I've had good experiences with WebHostFace and Web Hosting Canada for these operations.

If you aren't, I'd still recommend a colocated or dedicated server, for faster connections and power redundancies. Hetzner or OVH are nice for this.

So why wouldn't you recommend home hosting?

Slower internet speeds leading to downtime.

It might actually be against your ISPs terms of use.

Servers are loud.

Your IP may be blocked overseas.

If you aren't on a Tier 1 ISP, poor peering can lead to lower SEO.

Power outages. I don't anticipate you investing in multi-thousand dollar batteries.

Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

We already have a Comcast business line getting 150mb down and 30up, and the only worries I'd have are power outages but we do have a generator.

30 up? Ok for smaller sites, not so much for the bigger ones. I'd still personally go for a dedicated server off-site or reseller account. It would probably be cheaper anyway considering servers are quite expensive new...
