M.2 setup options

I’m building a new PC. My expertise is in servers, high end storage an mainframes so all a bit different to the home setup. Been a few years since last building my own machine so in need of a little advice.

The new x470 motherboard supports two M.2 drives. I have a couple of fast Drives kicking around, a 256gb one and a 1tb one. Does it make sense to use the smaller drive as a windows boot drive and the bigger drive to house all applications or is there a better configuration. I will be keeping my files on a mirrored pair of spinning 6tb disks backed up to a remote NAS.

what board is that exactly? You already have that?

256mb drive is not enough for modern Windows. If it is 256gb though... I might put windows in there and leave big apps/games in the 1tb drive.

which Gigabyte Aurous X470: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/AMD-X470-B450

careful about 2nd m.2 slot .. on some boards it's m.2 SATA only. On aorus 7 gaming wifi 2nd slot is pci-e/sata but if pci-e ssd is used the pci-e x4 slot is disabled.

Also, 2ns m.2 is usually connected to chipset which has pci-e 2.0 lanes, which means max 1GB/s for pci-e x2 SSDs or max. 2GB/s for pci-e x4 SSDs.

1st m.2 ssd is direct cpu, pci-e 3 x4 (4 x ~970MB/s)
