External GPU power brick

I am working on an external gpu project for my laptop with a 1070 that i have. I wanted a psu without all of the wires and such. The 150w 360 one had the power specifications i needed. I figured I could splice the +12v and the grounds together on an 8 pin connector.

If you're using a EXP GDC dock for your project, you can simply get a psu that has an 8-pin connector on it already; Google for the Dell DA2 power brick, its 220W and should be enough for almost any dedicated graphics card

If I wanted to use an external power brick as supplimentary power to my gpu, would the 5v rail be required? i wanted to get a 150w 12v power brick but i would not have 5v. Could I run this without the 5v rail and just the 12v rail?

Build:

Intel Core I7 6700k (clocked to 4.6ghz)

Patriot Viper 3000mhz ddr4

ASUS maximus 8 hero (I hate this mobo)

Evga gtx 1080 superclocked

250GB Samsung 850 evo

2tb WD Black 7200rpm

Ek watercooling kit a240g with 360 expansion pack

Primochill Vue Red fluid

Would you recommend an old xbox 360 12v 150w power brick for an external gpu? Just curious on the reliability of it. I can get the 12 volts i need for pcie power if i splice on an 8 pin connector. I will be using this with one of those external gpu adapters.

Are you using an external gpu...or an internal one, that you want to add power to?

There are a ton of different psu's for small form factor builders, pico psu's etc. But I reckon you'd be best off just getting an SFX psu, and a little board called an 'Add2psu'. What that does is you just plug the pcb onto the 24-pin motherboard cable, get a power source from your original psu, and that should trigger the SFX to come on with the rest of the system. So you can run two psu's in the same PC, and have the second one dedicated to the graphics card.

Out of interest, what sort of card are you using to need that sort of power? If the card isn't getting enough juice, is it not worth considering just changing the main psu in the PC?
