I am looking to buy a small ultra portable secondary machine for media consumption/note taking/creating docs/ppts..

For that I've looked at Surface Go 4GB Ram/64GB emmc storage variant and I just wanted to make sure that it's the right choice, I've never used 4gb ram on Win 10 before so don't know it's actual performance and keep in mind that I am coming from a 7200rpm HDD so I don't think emmc storage will be a problem for me but let me know your thoughts.. I will have to buy surface type cover and surface pen so my cost goes up significantly and thats the reason I'm not keen on 8GB version but if this 4gb version is not going to be very usable then pls let me know.. Also any good alternatives for my use case are welcome. Cost for 4gb variant for me is approx $500 and 8gb variant is $714 as I am from India. Also let me know if you think Surface Go 2 will be coming out soon if you guys have any info on that..

The Surface Go is a very attractive product but the CPU will be the biggest limitation

Yea but will the 4gb ram be enough for smooth operation in win 10? I am aware that I won't be able to do any heavy tasks... but 2-3 tabs in edge and one note?edit: music?

I have the surface pro 4 4gb. It's not a main PC replacement, but it's acceptable. I wish I'd get the 8 gig model though.

I do have a main PC which can handle all the heavy lifting I would need so thats not an issue... What's your use case? Which use case/program/etc makes you wish for 8gb model? For me it's a $200 jump so is it worth the extra price in your opinion?

It's my main laptop for University. I use it for note taking (which is invaluable, really), but the lack of ram is annoying when it comes to general usability. Opening more than a few tabs or programs really chokes the poor thing. It just gets slow and frustrating.

My friend has the fully decked out surface go and it's not exactly a performance beast either, acting sluggishly at times. I'm sure the experience won't be bad, but I doubt you'll want to use the 4gb go for anything other than note taking and some very light web usage.

I'll be using it just for that and some media consumption... Would you recommend the 4gb version then and as you said sometimes even 8gb version acts sluggish so would you still recommend the 8gb version over the $200 cheaper 4gb version..

I guess if you're settling, might as well settle all the way. How much in dollars does the 4 gb go cost?

edit: not including any other peripherals

I think pony up then. By the time you spend 500$, you might as well pay a little more to get something much better.. I'd rather skimp and get the 50$ old pen which is compatible with the go and grab the keyboard later on than get a worse, non upgradeable machine.

or get something used\refurbished. I got my surface pro 4 4gb core i5 for 615$ on amazon +100$ s&h to israel a year and a half ago. Maybe there's a deal in that department...

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the 64gb version also have slower storage than the 128gb one?

Yes, it has emmc storage which is a tad bit faster than HDD 7200rpm but alot slower than SSD but since I am coming from an HDD thats not a big issue for me..

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I didn't mention that I needed pen support... btw I am eyeing Asus Flip 14 here: https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B07PTZ3TYQ/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A3RF81B856FZL5&psc=1
